The department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy is an important associated department of Andaman and Nicobar islands institute of Medical Sciences. It is present on the first floor of the historical Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital. In this day and age where a doctor needs to be abreast with variety of skin disorders, the department is determined to make the student understand skin as mirror of one’s general health. It strives to make all undergraduate students aware of the structure, functions and diseases of skin. The students will also learn to identify the various venereal diseases, appreciate the importance of these and acknowledge the tact to handle such patients. The department will also inform patients about the unique nature of Leprosy to help in pushing out this disease which still has considerable social stigma.
The department has an OPD and a separate STD clinic. The OPD has an examination cubicle. The separate STD clinic has facility for examination and counseling of patients. It works in accordance with appropriate NACO guidelines. The admitted patients are kept in a separate 10 bedded Dermatology ward.

Being the tertiary referral hospital of these islands the department caters to a patient load of average 150 patients daily. The variety of patients is impressive because of, both varied racial mix of population and the tropical climate. Basic diagnostic techniques like Gram’s, Ziehl- Nielsen and Tzanck smear are followed. The department provides for facilities like Electrocautery, radiofrequency and chemical cautery with Trichloroacetic acid.
